Most Rev. Dr. Johannes Gorantla OCD ● Born on 27 Feb 1974 at Nawabupeta, in the diocese of Vijayawada. ● Parents: Gorantla Chinnappa and Rojanamma. Of the seven children, he is the sixth one. He has 3 brothers and 3 sisters. ● Belongs to the Order of the Discalced Carmelites (OCD) and if the first Telugu OCD Priest. ● Solemn Profession: April 2000 ● Ordination: 10 January 2002 as the first Telugu OCD priest. ● Studies: BA Philosophy (Gold Medal in MG University, Kerala); B. Th from Teresianum, Rome; Licentiate in Sacred Scripture SSL from Biblicum, Rome; Doctorate in Biblical Theology STD from the Gregorian University, Rome. Some of the offices held: 2008-2014: Provincial, Andhra Province 2014-2015: Superior and Parish Priest at Nacharam, Archdiocese of Hyderabad 2010-2014: AP RCRI president. 2008-2014: Consulter of the Diocese of Khammam 2008-2014: Member of the APBC Bible commission 2008-2014: Member of the APBC Commission for Proclamation: 2010-2014: Vice Chairman of the APBC Commission for catholic education 2015-2021: Asst. General of the Discalced Carmelites, Rome 2022-Feb. 2024: Rector, Seminarium Missionum, Teresianum, Rome; In addition he was the visiting professor of New Testament at Marianum,Pontifical institute of Theology, and at Teresianum, the pontifical institute of theology and spirituality. In Feb 2022, he began his second doctorate in Spiritual theology. It is in the middle of this journey that he was elected the bishop of Kurnool. Publications: In addition to several articles in different periodicals, he published a series of 5 volumes on Carmelite Spirituality in Telugu; of which The translation of the Way of Perfection of St. Teresa of avila "Paripurnatha Margamu" with commentary is a master piece and a solid contribution to the Telugu Catholic liturature. In English, "Riches a blessing or a curse", An exegetical and theological commentary on some of the parables of Luke, published by St. Paul's in 2022. Languages known: Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, English, Italian, German and Spanish. He also has a good knowledge of Greek and Hebrew the ancient biblical languages. |
