History
The Salesian Society was founded by St. John Bosco (1815-1888) in the year 1859, in Turin, Italy. The Constitutions of the Society were approved on 3rd April, 1874, by Pope Pius IX. The principal activity of the Society is the education of the poor youth both academically and through technical centres to make of them good Christians and honest citizens. A great thrust in keeping with the Charism of the founder is given for the welfare of the marginalized youth in a very special way for the street children. Salesians came to India in 1922 and there are presently ten provinces in India. The Society in India and other countries have taken up many mission centres and regions. There are presently two centres in Kurnool diocese.
Apostolate in the Diocese
At Kurnool, Non Formal Vocational training centre for school dropouts and rehabilitation of child labourers, evening classes for academic subjects, and coaching for government examinations. The centre at Rapthadu, Anantapur is meant for evangelization of the mandals around. Donbosco Navajeevan is a shelter home for street children and child labourers.
