History
The Order of Carmel derives its name from a promontory in Palestine famed for its beauty and sanctity from time immemorial. The Holy Prophet Elias lived on this Mount Carmel, a man of prayer and action, mighty in word and deed “burning with zeal for the Lord God of Hosts”. He has been always regarded as the father, model and inspiration for the hermits who perform their hermitical life Mount Carmel. And his disciples were called the brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Between 1206-1214 St. Brocard obtained the rule from St Albert, Patriarch of Jerusalem. In 1238 through the attacks of the Persians, the Order spread to the west. In 1245 Pope Innocent IV,approved the rule and raised the Order as a Mendicant Order.
In 1251 July 16th, the heavenly Queen of Carmel appeared to St. Simon Stock and gave him the scapular of the Order. There followed a period of splendor and prosperity. In 1431 Pope Eugene IV granted the mitigation of the rule due to the great Plague of the 14th centure. Generous efforts to restore the ancient discipline were soon begun. The glory of establishing a reformed branch of the Order was reserved to St. Theresa of Avila. It was founded on 24th August, 1562 at Avila, Spain. She directed it entirely at the service of the Church in solitude, prayer, contemplation and strict poverty. On 28th November 1568, she founded the first monastery of the OCD Fathers with the help of St John of the Cross. The son and daughters of St. Theresa have rapidly spread through out the world.
In fact in 1970 then Bishop of Warangal Late Most Rev. Alphonsus Beretta PIME invited the Carmelites of Manjummal Province, Kerala to work in the Diocese. So the missionaries landed in the coal city of Kothagudem on 31st July, 1971. From their spread to other Diocese of Andhra Pradesh. And it grew into the level of Regional Vicariate on 25th March 1998. With the Carmelite presence in the various Dioceses of Andhra Pradesh and with more than 32 Carmelite religious it was raised to the status of Commissariat on September 14th 2005.
